Amazon’s Turlock fulfillment center was abuzz with youthful energy on Thursday as ten children, ages 4 to 7, joined their parents for the “Proud of My Parent” tour.
This unique initiative offered kids a behind-the-scenes look at the day-to-day operations of the Amazon facility, allowing them to witness firsthand what their parents do at work.
A Day of Discovery and Delight
The tour kicked off with a high-five between four-year-old Andrew and his grandmother, Melisa Newsome, an Amazon employee. This simple gesture set the tone for a day filled with wonder and excitement as the kids embarked on their adventure through the expansive 1 million-square-foot fulfillment center.
Five-year-old Kingston, one of the young participants, found himself in a break room battling a slice of pepperoni pizza almost as big as he is. When asked about his favorite part of the tour, Kingston enthusiastically replied, “The airplanes,” while taking a sip of chocolate milk.
His mother, Nichari Holcombe, chuckled and clarified, “I don’t know what he’s talking about,” highlighting the imaginative nature of young minds.
Mini Amazon Associates in Action
The special guests were outfitted with safety vests, boots, and even their own I.D. badges, making them feel like official Amazon associates. This added a sense of importance and excitement as they set out on their hour-long trek through the facility.
Four-year-old Andrew was particularly fascinated by watching his grandmother operate machinery at her workstation. Standing slack-jawed, he observed the precision and skill required in her daily tasks.
Five-year-old Fox beamed with pride as his mother, Jazy Quick, pointed out various machines and explained their functions. Similarly, five-year-old Rosy was thrilled by the tour, exclaiming, “It’s bigger and cooler. I love it,” as her mother, Jackie Estrada, guided her through the different sections.
A Thoughtfully Timed Event
Patty Vega, Amazon’s general manager assistant, explained the timing of the event, noting, “We aimed to do this between Mother’s Day and Father’s Day when the kids are out of school and there’s a little more flexibility with their schedules.”
According to the source, this thoughtful scheduling ensured maximum participation and enjoyment for both the children and their parents.
Vega’s popularity soared when she wheeled in several boxes of pizza just after the tour. “It was just amazing to see the excitement on their faces,” she remarked, capturing the essence of the day. The combination of learning, exploration, and tasty treats made the experience unforgettable for the young visitors.
Building Connections and Understanding
The “Proud of My Parent” tour not only provided the children with a fun day out but also helped them gain a deeper understanding of their parents’ work environment. It fostered a sense of pride and admiration as they saw the complexity and scale of operations at the Amazon fulfillment center.
This initiative exemplifies how companies can create meaningful connections between employees’ personal and professional lives, enhancing workplace culture and family bonds.
