Northeast Georgia is on high alert after an incident involving an armed suspect and law enforcement officers.
The Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) is leading the search for Montavious Cantrell Winkfield, 37, following a shooting in Toccoa on Monday afternoon.
According to the GBI and news source WSB-TV , officers from the Toccoa Police Department attempted a traffic stop on Diagonal Street near Broad Street.
Winkfield reportedly exited his vehicle and opened fire on the officers, prompting one officer to return fire. Thankfully, no officers were injured in the exchange.
Winkfield managed to escape the scene on foot. Authorities are urging residents to exercise caution and avoid approaching Winkfield, who is considered armed and dangerous.
