Macon, GA (WGXA) – A heroic act turned tragic on Friday afternoon when a man drowned while saving several children at the Ocmulgee River Riverwalk.

Witnesses recounted that the 33-year-old man was swimming with several children when some of them began struggling in the water. The man immediately swam out to rescue the children, successfully bringing them to safety. However, he disappeared from sight shortly after ensuring the children were safe.

Emergency responders arrived promptly and began searching for the man. They located his body shortly before 1:27 p.m.
Despite their efforts, the man was pronounced dead at the scene by Deputy Coroner Luanne Stone. His identity is being withheld pending notification of his next of kin.
