A tragic incident unfolded at Smith State Prison in Georgia on Sunday when inmate Jaydrekus Hart, 34, fatally shot 24-year-old kitchen worker Aureon Shavea Grace before taking his own life.
Hart, serving a 20-year sentence for voluntary manslaughter and aggravated battery, somehow obtained a weapon which he used in the attack.
The Georgia Department of Corrections is investigating how Hart accessed the firearm.

“GDC Special Agents are responding and providing staffing support to the facility,” the department stated, emphasizing their commitment to understanding the circumstances leading to the tragedy.
Aramark, the food service company employing Grace, expressed deep sorrow over the loss. “We are heartbroken over the loss of our colleague and our hearts and prayers go out to her family,” said Aramark spokeswoman Debbie Albert.
The company pledged full cooperation with the Georgia Department of Corrections during the investigation.

This isn’t the first violent incident at Smith State Prison; last year, correctional officer Robert Clark was killed in an attack by an inmate wielding a homemade weapon.
Layton Lester, the perpetrator, faces additional charges related to the assault.
